Class R/1CM
Welcome to our Reception and Year 1 class
Mrs Copeland and Mrs McCarthy are our Reception and Year 1 class teachers.
Mrs Fowell is their teaching assistant.
In our class we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage for our Reception children. The teaching and learning takes place through a balance of play based, child initiated and adult led activities. Children’s interests are incorporated into our topic planning and help to develop and extend the children’s learning.
Their understanding and achievements are recorded in an individual learning journey, which may include photographs, observations and samples of work, both independent and teacher led. We actively encourage parents to contribute to these journals and provide opportunities throughout the year for children to share their work.
Our Year 1 children work on the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1, and much of the foundation subject learning takes place through topics. As we are a mixed year group class, our topics have been developed to enhance learning for all children in their respective year groups with opportunities to challenge and extend their knowledge and understanding.
We recently introduced the Read Write Inc scheme for the teaching of letters and sounds and early reading and writing. We also have a scheme for mathematical teaching, and provide enhancement activities in the provision areas to support the focused teaching sessions.
As the year progresses we aim to prepare the children for the next stage of their education providing a little more structure to the day for our Early Years children.
We acknowledge the involvement of parents in their child’s learning and we are always available to discuss any issues at the start and end of the school day. Our weekly newsletters provided detailed information about what we have been covering and how you can help and support at home.
